Who has a government job that pays $123,965 and has a $1 million dollar office budget, but has nothing to do?  If you guessed Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, you guessed correctly.  Recently Lt. Gov. Newsom was seen having a picture taken of him and a young boy in the Capital.  As the young boy’s mother prepared to take the picture the young boy asked “What’s a lieutenant governor?”  Lt. Gov. Newsom without breaking his smile responded with “I ask myself that every day.”  Lt. Gov. Newsom’s only real duty is to cover for the Governor when he is out of state.  He also has the role of being the Chairman of the State Commission on Economic Development, but it does not meet since the Governor over the last two years, has not appointed enough members to make a quorum to hold a meeting.  In April as the acting Governor, Lt. Gov. Newsom appointed the avocado as the state fruit and the almond as the state nut.  It’s also interesting to note that the Lt. Governor’s office is just across the hallway from the Governor’s office, yet there has not been one face to face meeting between the Governor and the Lt. Governor since they won the 2010 election.  I bet you would like an extra $123,965 a year for naming a state fruit and nut!
