Declaring Our Freedom of Faith*
Recently this was written in Pastor David Mitchell’s blog:
“This weekend we are again reminded of the importance of the Fourth of July. John Adams wrote his wife the following regarding the Declaration of Independence: ‘It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.’”*
Much of the original intent of declaring a celebration of independence rings true today in our celebrations of independence. I am extremely grateful for the heritage we share and the unearned privileges and freedoms we enjoy. And I am increasingly aware of how vulnerable these freedoms have become. Ultimately my greatest freedom is in found in my relationship with Jesus Christ, which amazingly is true for any follower of Christ regardless of which nation or system of government they live.
Have a happy, thankful 4th of July!
