Derrick
Rescue Mission Senior Case Manager, Derrick Burton is our November Employee of the Month.
Derrick’s testimony is a captivating account of God’s redemption and transformation when we surrender our purpose to his kingdom. The Rescue Mission and all of our clients are blessed with a wellspring of wisdom and God’s word through Derrick’s guidance and counsel. Derrick selflessly serves alongside our team and adds value to all of our work. Quick to prayer, Derrick is truly an honorable man of God. Congratulations Derrick, you help make the Rescue Mission the incredible place that it is, in numerous and crucial ways!
What is your full name? Derrick Burton
Family: Wife, 2 children, 3 step-children and 2 grandchildren
Where did you grow up? Jamaica, Queens, NY
Hobbies? Reading and watching sports. Go New York Giants! New York Knicks!
How long have you been at the mission? 7 years in January – started as a Janitor, promoted to Janitor and Landscaping Supervisor, promoted to Case Manger 1 year later, and then to Senior Case Manager.
How did you hear about the job opportunity at the mission? I was going to a church and a former board member of the mission asked about my experience. I told him I was an Asst. Director at a Teen Home in Arizona and he gave me the information for the Rescue Mission and the only open position was a Janitor and I applied because I knew this is where God wanted me to be.
What do you love most about your job? Being a part of people rebuilding their lives. That’s pretty special that I get to be a part of that.
What is the hardest part of your job?  Seeing the failures and the bad choices that people make.
How have you grown since coming to the mission? This job keeps me in my word so that I can pour into others. My spiritual walk has grown and my love for people has grown.
Church? The Dwelling Place Church of God in Christ
Favorite Verse? 1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
Motivation to keep going: Knowing that the word of God that is being poured in their lives will change their lives.
