“I learned I’ve been selling myself short for a long time. I now have a new mindset going forward and new ambition.”
“I learned I am capable and smart and I deserve greatness. Thank you for everyone who saw potential in me and called out greatness in me that I didn’t see in myself.”
“I have learned I have marketable job skills and I have a lot to offer a company.”
“I learned that I can have more than just a job – I can have a career.”
“I am a lot more confident in myself today. The grace of God has allowed me to start my life over again. I learned to never give up, and to keep moving on.”
These are a few of the responses to the question, “What have you learned?” asked of our newest class of thirteen Road to Success job workshop participants. At the conclusion of the workshop, the participants are able to stand up, one by one, and share something they have learned throughout the week-long employment readiness workshop that each of our residents completes prior to the final phase of their program here at the Rescue Mission.
These moments are always emotional – men and women that have come from backgrounds of homelessness, drug addiction, abuse, poverty, and mental illness are now able to stand up as changed and transformed individuals They ready to step into the next season of new life. They are no longer held captive by the lie that they have nothing to offer an employer or their community. Through their time in the workshop, they have been taught how to identify their strengths and skills and play to them – because everyone has strengths. The result is incredible: strong and confident men and women that are eager for the next step on their journey to self-sufficiency.
And this is why we do what we do. Providing a meal and a bed is vital to survival. but if we only provide these, there is a much greater chance that they will be back at our gates soon after they leave. In order to not just survive, but thrive, it is so important for these men and women to move forward with renewed confidence, as completely transformed individuals.
Congratulations to the most recent Road to Success Participants! We are eager to see where this next step in your journey takes you!
